Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Three Young People, 1866

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of Node no San attacking the beauty Sangetsu Osen with a huge knife. He raises the weapon above his head as his unsuspecting victim smiles sweetly at the commoner Konezumi Chuji at left. She wears a quilted fireman's jacket decorated with a dragon and clouds above waves over a striped kimono and red under robe, a comb slipping loose from the side of her head. Chuji stares back at her with a sneer, a knife concealed behind his back. He has an unusual upper body tattoo of a snake. From left, the actors are Ichimura Kakitsu IV, Sawamura Tanosuke III, and Nakamura Shikan IV. Nice large expressive figures set off by a bright yellow background, detailed with fine linework in the hair.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 27 3/8"
