Scene from Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych from the play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," a drama about three samurai triplets named Sakuramaru (Cherry), Umeomaru (Plum), and Matsuomaru (Pine). The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the treacherous downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's employer, Shihei. Here, Sakuramaru and Uemomaru confront Matsuomaru, who stands at right, wrapped in a voluminous pink robe, a covered standard over his shoulder. He grimaces angrily, his flared wig adding to his imposing appearance. In the center, Umeomaru stares back over his shoulder, holding his sword upright at his side. Sakuramaru watches more quietly at left as he leans forward. A great design with large expressive figures and boldly patterned robes, giving the work a strong graphic appeal. Includes fine bokashi shading on the background.
