Scene from Hazama Gunki Narumi no Kikigaki, 1870

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play Hazama Gunki Narumi no Kikigaki" at the Morita Theater. In the center, the young samurai Miura Samanosuke sits astride a black horse, flinging one hand up above his head, a gun in his other hand. He grins at the samurai Imagawa Ujimoto at right, who glares back at him with a tightlipped frown, a tasseled command baton in hand. At left, the beauty Asagiri looks up with a worried expression as she holds her naginata against her shoulder. A battle can be seen in the background with samurai in dark silhouette fighting with swords in the center, and others aiming guns at right. A handsome design with large colorful figures, detailed with burnishing on the horse and armor, and embossing on the white kimono collars.
