New Play at the Kabukiza: Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Musashibo Benkei, 1899

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the warrior monk Benkei in the play "The Subscription List" (Kanjincho) at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater in Tokyo. Dressed as a yamabushi or itinerant mountain monk, the samurai leans forward aggressively, throwing his hand out before him and thrusting his chin up defiantly. He wars a black vest with a pattern of Buddhist wheels over a plaid kimono tucked in pants, a portable trunk containing a statue of a deity on his back. He wears a red stole called a yui-gesa which has white pompoms, and a small black cap tied under his chins with a braided cord. A terrific, large expressive figure, detailed with burnishing on the black areas of the vest and embossing on the pompoms.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 28 1/4"

Condition - Nice color and detail. A few repairs, creasing throughout.
