Shintomi Theater: Saigo Takamori 1878

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from a play at the Shintomi Theater featuring Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Saigo Takamori, a samurai who led the Meiji Restoration, but later turned against the government and became the leader of the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. Here, the bearded warrior relaxes at bottom center, looking up as a servant played by Ichikawa Sadanji prepares a cup of tea from a kettle over a blazing fire. An inset in the form of a book at upper right depicts his mistress, Oaki, performed by Iwai Hanshiro VIII. Nice expressive figures set off by a deep red background.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 26 7/8"

Condition - Nice color and detail. Backed with paper. Vertical folds, a few repairs, slight rippling.
