Sawamura Tossho II as Sutewakamaru

Series; A Competition of Powerful Magicians, 1873

Sawamura Tossho II as Sutewakamaru - Great kabuki portrait of Sawamura Tossho II as the magician Sutewakamaru, clinging to a wooden pole. A sword wrapped in brocade cloth is clenched between his teeth, and a huge bolder is tied to his back with ropes. His wet hair hangs limply around his face, and he wears a red kimono patterned with plovers flying above waves. A terrific design from a rarely seen Kunichika series, detailed with fine line work in the hair.

Image Size - 13 1/8" x 8 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail. Small losses at edges, a few holes, repaired. Creasing throughout.
