Snow on the Sumida River, Dawn of the New Year, 1863

Comments - Great scene of kabuki actors on the bank of the Sumida River at the New Year at dawn, a rosy glow spreading across the top of the sky as the sun rises. At right, Arashi Kichiroku I holds a branch over his shoulder decorated with lucky objects for the New Year, including a small target and a mask of Okame, the Goddess of Mirth. Behind him, Sawamura Tanosuke III holds a tiny cup of sake in her outstretched hand. In the center, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I takes a toothpick from his mouth with an angry frown, a gourd bottle dangling from a red cord in his hand. At left, Ichimura Kakitsu IV looks up with a sneer. The pillars of a stone torii gate frame a set of stone steps leading up the embankment. A terrific look at actors offstage, with a handsome setting.
