Samurai Gathering, 1883

Comments - Interesting kabuki triptych depicting a group of samurai gathered in an interior, exchanging glances as they talk. At lower right, an older man with thinning hair scowls as he looks up at the warrior sitting at top center. At bottom center, a young samurai with disheveled hair frowns up at the nobleman at upper right, who stares back at him with a tight-lipped expression. A large screen at the back of the room depicts a fierce-looking eagle or hawk against a red sky, with blue panels on either side patterned with the three hollyhock leaf crest of the Tokugawa clan. The actors in the center panel are Ichikawa Sadanji and Ichikawa Danjuro. An intriguing image with nice interaction between the figures.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 27 5/8"

Condition - Good color and detail. Backed with paper. Vertical fold at side.
