Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Momoyama monogatari, 1869

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Momoyama monogatari" (The Tale of Momoyama) at the Ichimura Theater of a concerned looking warrior Sato Masakiyo surrounded by three beauties. Wearing armor, he clutches his fan with both hands, staring ahead with eyes wide. A woman crouches beside him with a sly smile, looking up at him from the corners of her eyes. At right, the beauty Osaka mae seems alarmed, her open mouth revealing fashionably blackened teeth. Beside her, the daimyo Hisayoshi frowns down at her, his eyes narrowed. His kimono is patterned with gourds and vines over a bamboo trellis. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Mimasu, Onoe Kikujiro II, Kawarazaki Kunitaro II, Seki Sanjuro II, and Iwai Shijaku II. A handsome design with great interaction between the characters.
