Series; A Great Competition of Plays

Scene from Zenaku ryowa myomyo guruma, 1876 - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Zenaku ryowa myomyo guruma" at the Shintomi Theater of a commoner threatening a man with a sword. He grimaces angrily as he holds the blade before him, his intended victim falling backwards as he recoils before him. An inset above depicts a narrow stream meandering past a stone pillar. From left, the actors are Bando Hikosaburo V and Onoe Kikugoro V. Nice expressive figures set off by a deep red background, detailed with fine line work in the hair and burnishing on the black kimono collars. A rarely seen Kunichika series.

Condition - Nice color and detail. Backed with paper. Light rippling, light vertical line where backing papers meet, vertical crease on face.
