Performing for the Meiji Empress, 1877

Comments - Wonderful scene of ladies-in-waiting performing for the Meiji Empress. The woman in the center dances, gracefully waving a folding fan, accompanied by musicians playing drums and flute. The empress sits on a cushion at right, leaning against an armrest and watching attentively. A lovely palace setting with a large vase of magnolia branches in front of an elegant folding screen at upper right, the verandah overlooking flowering cherry trees in the garden. Beautifully detailed with faint embossing on the white kimono and soft shading on the sky. A charming triptych.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
