Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Hototogisu Date no Kikigaki," which premiered at the Shintomiza Theater in 1876. The drama tells the story of a Date clan samurai who is planning to usurp the young leader of the clan. Here, the commoner Sanzaemon confronts a samurai who is reading from a scroll as he stands in front of a notice board. The warrior glares back at Sanzaemon, scowling angrily. At left, the samurai Asahina Yataro watches the men, leaning forward as he grips the hilt of his sword. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I, Onoe Kikugoro V, and Bando Hikosaburo V. Nice large expressive figures set off by the deep red sky. Includes burnishing on the black kimono collars and embossing on the white sash and white kimono trim at right.

Condition - This print with nice color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Vertical folds at sides. Small loss at edge, repaired. A few creases, paper remnant and slight rubbing at edges. Please see photos for details.
