Series; Illustrations of Stories from Various Newspapers

Kyokai Shinbun, No. 5, 1874 - Interesting scene of a wedding ceremony. Here, an older man kneels on the floor beside the bride, tugging on her robe and gesturing with his fan as he speaks angrily. She looks down with a demure smile, pulling away the edge of her white outer robe. She wears a red and white geometric patterned kimono over a red under robe, her hair protectively wrapped in a cloth. The groom sits on the floor at right, looking up at her affectionately. Behind him, a low table holds a figure of Jo, part of the elderly couple of Jo and Uba symbolizing longevity and marital harmony, with pine and plum sprigs. Beautifully detailed with delicate embossing on the white robe, and a lovely floral motif wrapping around the top of the text panel at top. A rarely seen series illustrating sensational stories taken from various different newspapers (shinbun).
