Series: Hurrah for Japan: One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs, 1904 - 1905
One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs - Following the success of Kiyochika's series of political cartoons from the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 - 1895 titled "One Hundred Victories, One Hundred Laughs," he created a second series with the same title during the Russo-Japanese War in 1904 - 1905. The series title is a pun on the phrase, "One Hundred Battles, One Hundred Victories." Like his earlier comic series, each print is a wildly unrestrained illustration from the artist's imagination, filled with wartime propaganda demonstrating Japan's superiority and might over its enemies. Kiyochika's satiric depictions poked fun at the Russians, and often specifically the Tsar Nicholas II and General Kuropatkin, the Russian Imperial Minister of War. Prints from this second series are much less common.
