Comments - Fantastic kabuki scene of the demon of Mt. Atago attacking the samurai Watanabe no Tsuna in the dance drama "Modoribashi" (Modori Bridge). While crossing a bridge said to be haunted one night in Kyoto, Tsuna met a beautiful woman. When he caught a glimpse of her reflection on the water below, he discovered that she was a demon in disguise. When she realized that he knows her true nature, she transformed into the demon of Mt. Atago to attack him. Here, she grimaces with rage as she grabs the back of the warrior's neck, gripping his hair with his other hand. The demon's kimono features spiraling clouds and lightning bolts, the fabric blowing wildly about her and the wind sending the samurai's hair flying in every direction as he reaches behind his neck in an attempt to free himself. Beautifully detailed with fine line work in the hair, a subtle burnished pattern on the black court cap, and metallic pigment that has oxidized to a dark tone on the pink and white lining of the robe at upper left. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Sadanji I and Onoe Kikugoro V. A fascinating design with large bold figures.
