Flowering Autumn Plants, 1879

Comments - Attractive scene of the Meiji Empress and her ladies-in-waiting enjoying an outing to view the autumn color of the maple trees. The empress stands in the center, wearing a gray robe patterned with phoenixes over a white kimono tucked into red pants, the legs trailing beneath her feet. She holds a folding fan, and smiles as an attendant bows and offers her a black lacquer boxes. Autumn grasses and blossoms fill the background beneath a canopy of orange leaves. Nicely detailed with embossing in the white kimono trim and burnishing in the black kimono at left. Only the second time we've seen this lovely design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail. A couple light creases at edges.
