Musashi, Flowers of Takada, Ota Dokan and Yamabuki no koji, No. 7 - Terrific scene of the 15th century warrior Ota Dokan Sukenaga seeking refuge from a sudden rainstorm at a rundown mill, stopping to ask to borrow a straw raincoat. Instead, the mill owner's daughter Benizara presented him with a bouquet of yamabuki, yellow mountain roses, while reciting a 10th century poem. An assistant had to explain to Dokan that the family was too poor to lend him a simple coat, and he felt terribly ashamed, deciding then and there to learn poetry so he that could become more empathetic. The beauty kneels before him as she humbly offers her gift, the five petals of the flowers a reference to the five-petaled family crest on Ota's garment. The inset above shows the castle that Ota built on the site, the forerunner of Edo Castle, with Mt. Fuji rising in the distance. Nicely detailed.
