Comments - Handsome depiction of the first three shoguns of the Tokugawa dynasty along with their wives and attendants. At right, Ieyasu, the first shogun, appears dressed in a beautiful black robe with a subtle burnished pattern. Two young women kneel at his sides and a youthful sword bearer crouches behind him. In the center, the second shogun, Hidetada, sits on a cushion dressed in formal court robes patterned with the three hollyhock leaf crest of the Tokugawa clan over pants and a tall black court cap. The beauty standing at left smiles down at him happily while the woman at right carries an offering tray with sweets topped with a pine sprig. The third shogun, Iemitsu, sits beside his wife at left, looking down with a sober expression. An elderly retainer kneels next to a standing screen with a painting of a fortress in the mountains on it. A nicely detailed subject, attractively colored and detailed with burnishing on the black kimono, the black vest, the black cap, and the black lacquer frame of the screen, plus faint embossing on the white kimono collars.
