Scene from Gosho no Gorozo, 1887

Comments - Dramatic scene from the play commonly known as "Gosho no Gorozo" of the matron Yuri-no-Kata attacking the beauty Hototogisu, raising a short sword above her head as the frightened beauty scrambles backwards, throwing her hand out in self-defense. Yuri-no-Kata is attempting to kill Hototogisu for becoming the mistress of Tomoenojo, who is legally married to Yuri-no-Kata's daughter. At left, a Tomoenojo holds a lantern high, looking up with a sober expression. The drama takes place in a beautiful garden with flowering irises growing in the water along a wooden walkway. From left, the actors are Bando Kakitsu, Nakamura Fukusuke, and Onoe Kikugoro. A colorful design with large expressive figures in an attractive setting. The first time we've seen this Chikanobu design.
