Onoe Kikugoro V as the Rickshaw Driver Matsu and Bando Shucho II as Omo, 1884

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait featuring Onoe Kikugoro V as the rickshaw driver Matsu, a shizoku or former samurai during the Meiji era who was forced to find a new living after the samurai class was abolished. He looks down at the beauty Omo with a frown as he holds a blue cloth over his shoulder. He wears a blue jacket over a yellow button front shirt or vest and pants. Omo smiles up at him happily as she holds the handle of an umbrella. Bando Shucho II appears as Omo. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 8 3/4"

Condition - Nice color and detail. Backed with paper. Vertical fold, slight rippling.
