Sawamura Tanosuke IV as Lady Hanako and Suketakya Takasuke as Kyojiya Minosuke, 1884

Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait featuring Sawamura Tanosuke IV as Lady Hanako and Suketakya Takasuke as Minosuke, the son of a scroll shop (kyojiya) proprietor in a play at the Shintomi Theater. The beauty looks down at her sweetheart with a slightly worried expression, lost in thought. Minosuke stares back at her with an angry frown, his hair cropped short in the latest Meiji fashion. The figures are set off by a deep red background. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 1/4" x 8 5/8"

Condition - Nice color and detail. Backed with paper. Slight rippling.
