Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Popular and Prosperous Pleasure Quarters, 1888

Comments - Beautiful scene of elegantly dressed courtesans strolling through the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The beauty at left wears a striking kimono depicting a carp leaping up a waterfall, while the obi of the woman in the center features a fierce dragon. The women totter along on extremely tall black geta clogs. A low fence surrounds a garden with flowering irises and small lampposts. Teahouses line the street in the background, with red paper lanterns hanging from the eaves. A lovely design, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black clogs and lamps and accents of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone on the kimono. Beautiful color and condition. The first time we've seen this Chikanobu triptych.
