Eastern Brocades, Day and Night Compared - Designed in 1886, Chikanobu's extraordinary "Eastern Brocade" series features a fantastic range of subjects, including brave warriors, eerie ghosts, timeless beauties, and famous figures from traditional tales of triumph and treachery. These beautiful images bring the history and legends of Japan to life with colorful characters and a wonderful attention to detail. Note the appealing compositions and fine printing in these Meiji era masterworks, many of which include deluxe treatments such as burnishing, embossing, or the addition of mica. These attractive designs are a nice choice to collect or display.

Asaji Fields, No. 6 - Intriguing image from an old story about a man who goes off to sell the silk his wife has woven. A war prevents him from returning for several years, and when he finally arrives home, his village is in ruins, but his beautiful young wife greets him at the door as usual. The next morning she is gone, and he realizes that she was a ghost. She kneels before him, a small torch in her hand pointing back at their home. A silhouette in the window shows a ghostly woman spinning silk at a spinning wheel. The inset at top shows villagers praying to a statue of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. A charming scene with beautiful detail in the clothing and surroundings.
