Intermediate Tokaido Stations and Views on the Narita Highway

Hiroshige created the designs for the Intermediate Tokaido Stations and Views on the Narita Highway in 1834-1835, but for some reason, the series was never printed during his lifetime. In 1919, the S. Sakai publishing firm learned of the existence of the original drawings intended for Edo era release, which belonged to Mr. Takahata Kazuwo, a collector in Yokohama. Sakai used the original drawings, which had already been prepared for block cutting, to expertly produce the first and only edition of the series ever released.

This lovely group explores some of the smaller and lesser-known but breathtakingly beautiful stations along the famous Tokaido Road and the Narita Highway. From dramatic waterfalls and calm bays to snow-covered temples and flowering plum trees, Hiroshige captures the scenic beauty of these areas in this rare and unusual series.
