Yasuji Inoue (1864 - 1889) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
The Moon over Yushima Seido Temple

Series; True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo

Yasuji Inoue - Born in Tokyo in 1864, Yasuji Inoue became a student of Kobayashi Kiyochika when he was fourteen. Drawing heavily on Kiyochika's style and experimentation with Western art elements, Inoue's concern with light and shadows reflected the influence of French Impressionism, a departure from traditional ukiyo-e. The resulting images had a distinctly modern feeling for the time. Inoue favored depictions of the urban, rapidly changing cityscape. Sadly, he died prematurely in 1889 at the age of twenty-five. At the time of his death he showed great promise in the woodblock print field and would have likely continued as a major artist in Japanese woodblock prints.

True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo - Originally published between 1884 and 1889, Yasuji Inoue's "True Pictures of Famous Places in Tokyo" included 132 prints in the small yotsugiri (quarter oban) format depicting locations in Tokyo. Subjects range from temples and shrines to city streets and bridges, at different hours of the day and throughout the year. His atmospheric images offer a wonderful view of Meiji era Tokyo as he knew it. Beautifully printed with crisp detail, these reprints were published by Heibonsha of Tokyo in Showa 43 (1968). Originals from this series are difficult to find, so these high quality reprints offer a nice opportunity to collect some of Inoue's classic Meiji imagery.
