Series; Eight Favorite Things in the Modern World
Decorated Paper - Lovely portrait of a courtesan pensively looking down over her shoulder, her mouth slightly agape. She holds a roll of tissues in one hand and an ornate detailed pipe in the other, her hand hidden beneath her red tie-dyed under robe. She wears an elegant green kimono patterned with chrysanthemums and trimmed with a black floral collar. Her hair is arranged with many butterfly hairpins and a blue ribbon. At upper left are pictured the decorative papers of the title, one printed with bats in flight. A charming subject.
Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.
