The Revenge of the Soga Brothers, 1857

Comments - Terrific depiction of the famous night attack of the Soga Brothers at the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The brothers waited years to avenge the death of their father at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune, who accompanied Yoritomo on his hunt. In the center, the younger brother Goro steps up to the pavilion, brandishing his sword above his head with an angry grimace. At right, one of Yoritomo's retainers thrusts a sword before him as another tosses a rope at the attacker. The Shogun can be seen leaping to his feet in the room at upper right, reaching for his sword. A fantastic scene of this famous battle, wonderfully composed and detailed. The first time we've offered this subject.
