Vengeance at Takanawa from the Hakkenden, 1864

Comments - Dramatic scene from "Nanso Satomi Hakkenden," the epic novel about the Eight Dog Heroes, of a battle taking place in the countryside. At right, a samurai on a black horse has just fired an arrow as he gallops along. At bottom center, a young man kicks away an enemy's pole arm while gripping his sword with both hands, about to behead a foe. An arched bridge crosses over a narrow waterway through flooded rice fields, with a rustic wooden torii gate at left next to a lantern atop a wood pole. A lively scene with expressive figures and wonderful detail in the setting. The first time we've seen this subject.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 28 5/8"

Condition - Nice detail. Backed with paper, a few wrinkles, small stain.
