The Great Battle of Kai and Echigo Provinces, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific depiction of a battle between the forces of Kai and Echigo Provinces. Astride a black horse at right, Nagao Masakage raises his hand above his head as he looks back at the fighting behind him. At top center, a samurai on a gray horse charges towards an enemy on horseback, gripping his spear above his head with both hands. At lower left, two warriors fall over the side of a cliff locked in combat, one gripping the other by his throat. At upper left, a samurai carrying a stalk of bamboo with the severed heads of enemies swinging from it leans over the side of the cliff in alarm as he watches the men fall past. A dramatic design with wonderful detail and a striking natural setting.
