Comments - Terrific scene from the famous tale of the 47 ronin of the night attack on Moronao's palace. Here, the ronin have dragged Moronao from his hiding place in a storeroom, the young Oboshi Rikiya thrusting a spear at him as a fellow samurai shines a lantern across the scene. Moronao scowls angrily as he grabs the handle of the spear, another ronin behind him grasping the coward's wrist to prevent him from using his hand. Bundles of charcoal rest in the snow and fill the shed at left. Above fighting continues in the snowy courtyard, one ronin forced backwards into a pond at top center below a full moon. A fantastic design with wonderful handling of the shaft of light. The first time we've seen this subject.
