Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Kokoda Edo Koude no Takehiko" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. The commoner Ude no Kisaburo sits on the floor at right with a string of prayer beads in his hand. He has an upper body tattoo of a dragon with red flames, and one arm has been amputated. Beside him, Otori Ippei raises a sword above his head with both hands, ready to attack Kisaburo. In the center, the wife Koiso reacts with alarm, reaching for Kisaburo while pushing away the wrist of Maboroshi Chozo, who stands beside her. At left, Akebono Genta watches from a doorway, sneering angrily. The scene takes place in a shop with ledger books hanging on the wall at top center and rust colored curtains in the doorway. From left, the actors are Ichimura Kakitsu IV, Ichikawa Kuzo III, Onoe Kikugoro II, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Kataoka Juzo I. An intriguing subject and a rare depiction of an amputee in a kabuki print.
