Map of the Uji River Battlefield

Comments - Fantastic image of the famous race across the water at the Second Battle of Uji River, when two of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's generals fought to see who could reach the opposite shore and engage the enemy first. At upper left, Sasaki Shiro leads the way as on a light brown horse. Kajiwara Genda follows behind on a black horse, the deep water up to the horses' necks with just the head and helmet of the samurai visible. At lower right, a samurai leads Yoshitsune's horse by the reigns, Yoshitsune's helmet topped with a dragon, his loyal retainer Musashibo Benkei at his side. A terrific design with wonderful detail.

Artist - Yoshikata (active circa 1841 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 29 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Good detail. Backed with paper. V-shaped tear and large loss, a few losses at edges and holes, repaired. Vertical folds between panels. A few creases at edges, wrinkling at top center.
