Comments - Lively scene from the story "The Igagoe Revenge," a true tale that resulted in many popular kabuki plays. The hero, Shizuma, enlists the help of the swordsman Karaki Masaemon to avenge his father's death, waiting to attack the murderer Kawai Matagoro as he travels through Iga Pass. Here, two samurai practice martial arts using wooden weapons in front of a gathering of noblemen. In the center, Sakurai Rinzaemon grimaces with rage, biting his lower lip as he leaps on one foot wielding a long pole with a padded tip. At right, Masaemon thrusts his blunt-ended sword at his opponent with an angry frown, his feet spread firmly apart. The duel takes place in the courtyard of a country estate, with Sakurai watching at left with a bow in hand, and a daimyo seated on a red cushion in the center of the room behind the men. A fascinating subject with a handsome setting, detailed with a burnished pattern on the black kimono at right.
