Tsukimi no Hare Meiga no Ichijiku, 1862

Comments - Great scene from the kabuki play "Tsukimi no Hare Meiga no Ichijiku" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. In the center, Otaka Shuden looks over his shoulder with a tightlipped frown as he holds a drawstring purse in his hand. He wears a black kimono with a beautiful burnished geometric pattern over a red under robe. On either side of him, a man and a woman kneel in what looks like large casks with the boards falling down around him. The couple wear matching kimono border with peonies and irises. A strange wisp of blue smoke appears above each one of them, perhaps a sign of a supernatural event taking place. Willow branches frame the night sky above low grassy slopes and foliage. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. A fascinating subject.
