The Marriage Ceremony of Men and Women: Congratulations Sugoroku Game Board, 1867

Comments - Fantastic, large format, woodblock print sugoroku game board featuring activities relating to marriage and children. Sugoroku is a dice game similar to snakes and ladders that was popular with both adults and children. At top center right, a bride in a white kimono prepares to travel by palanquin to the groom's home, with the marriage ceremony conducted in the larger block at upper right. Other scenes show a newborn baby being washed in a shallow tub by an elderly woman, boys and girls painting signs, a couple at a tea stall, a clerk poring over a thick ledger, and beauties playing music. A charming theme for a sugoroku game, attractively colored.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 21 1 2" x 27 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Good color and detail. Small tears and holes along horizontal and vertical folds, repaired. Creasing throughout.
