Scene from Tsukimi no Hare Meiga no Ichijiku, 1862

Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Tsukimi no Hare Meiga no Ichijiku" at the Ichimura Theater of a commoner and a beauty outside a door as a man inside eavesdrops on them. At left, the commoner Danjuroshichi grips his sword as he stands beside the kneeling woman, frowning with eyes open wide. The beauty Hanshiro Oroku kneels before him with her hands clasped in prayer as if awaiting her fate, a sweet smile on her face. At right, Otaka Tonomo tilts his head as he listens, lifting the edge of his black coat. A full moon glows above the garden, and the walls of the house are cracked with missing plaster. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III, Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, and Nakamura Shikan IV. An intriguing subject with a nicely detailed setting, and a subtle burnished geometric pattern in the black kimono.
