Comments - Great kabuki scene of the ronin Funabashi Jirozaemon attacking a beauty in an iris garden. Leaning forward with a strange grimace he holds his sword before, balancing the tip with his other hand. At left, the beauty recoils from him, trying to scramble away on the wooden walkways over the water and holding her hand out in a stopping gesture. The woman at right seems unconcerned about the conflict, smiling happily as she holds up a paper lantern on the end of a pole, an umbrella over her shoulder. Rain slants down over the sky, splashing on the walkway and surface of the water. From left, the actors are Bando Shuka I as Osano, Nakamura Utaemon IV as Funabashi Jirozaemon, and Fujikawa Hanatomo III as Ohana. An intriguing subject with a handsome setting.
