Scene from Kanadehon Chushingura, 1854

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Kanadehon Chushingura," the classic drama about the 47 ronin, at the Ichimura Theater of Lady Kaoyo and the daimyo Ashikaga Tadayoshi in a room overlooking an iris garden. The beauty pats the side of her face dry with a towel as she hides behind a fan, a worried expression on her face. She wears a striking blue and white kimono patterned with bamboo, her red tie-dyed obi loosely wrapped around her. Tadayoshi scowls at her as he looks up from the poem slip he is reading. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro VIII and Onoe Baiko IV. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 3/8" x 18 1/2"

Condition - Nice detail. Backed with somewhat stiff paper. Vertical fold between panels.
