The Appeal of the Four Seasons, 1857 - Charming scene of Prince Genji and beauties relaxing in an interior. The young nobleman leans back on one hand at right, smiling as she takes a toothpick from his mouth. The beauty beside him holds a folded robe, and a meal is laid out on trays on the floor, including a large fish on a platter. Oddly, outside at left a scene from the kabuki play commonly known as "Seki no To" appears to be taking place, with the evil Otomo Kuronushi attempting to chop down a cherry tree with a huge ax. Nicely detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and trim, the white areas of Genji's robe, and the white sleeves of Kuronushi.
