Sawamura Tanosuke as Yaoya Oshichi, 1860

Comments - Great kabuki scene from one of the many plays based on the true story of Yaoya Oshichi, a 17th century teenager who sought refuge in a temple after a fire. While there, she fell in love with a monk, and in order to see him again, she set a fire that ended up destroying a large part of Edo. Here, the young beauty climbs a fire tower to sound a warning, smiling slyly as she tilts her head She wears a tie-dyed kimono tied with a red obi, her hair pulled back into a smooth bun adorned with a red lacquer comb, ribbons, and a floral ornament decorated with a tasseled bow. Snow falls through the evening sky. The actor is Sawamura Tanosuke III. An interesting portrait of this famous character.
