Scene from Genji Moyo Furisode Hinagata, 1838

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the play Genji Moyo Furisode Hinagata" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. In the center, the beauty Katsuragi fans herself with a rather crazed smile as the young nobleman Ashikaga Mitsuuji man playfully tugs at the sleeve of her kimono. A woman eavesdrops from behind the sliding wooden panels at left, an unhappy expression on her face. Delicate white blossoms frame the scene and a full moon glows in the darkening sky. The actors include Iwai Kakitsubata as Katsuragi and Ichimura Uzaemon XII as Mitsuuji. An attractive and interesting subject with fine bokashi shading in the sky.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 7/8" x 30 3/4"
