Scene from On-atsurae Satsuma no Shingata, 1856

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "On-atsurae Satsuma no Shingata" at the Nakamura Theater, a drama about the samurai Satsuma Gengobei, who falls in love with the geisha Koman. Here, Koman rolls up a letter to her sweetheart, smiling as she looks down, a brush caught between her teeth. At upper left, Gengobei stands outside the door, frowning angrily as he grabs the back of a man holding two wooden clappers, pulling him off balance, the man losing one clog. At right, the jealous samurai Sasa no Sangobei, who has been spurned by Koman, watches her through a window. From left, the actors are Kataoka Gado II, Iwai Kumesaburo III, and Seki Sanjuro III. Nice expressive figures in a handsomely detailed setting.
