Scene from Go Taiheiki Shiraishi Banashi, 1853

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Go Taiheiki Shiraishi Banashi" at the Kawarazaki Theater in Edo. At left, Koheiji's wife Otsuka looks up suspiciously with a strange grimace as she takes a dotted cloth from her shoulders, the loose hairs framing her face giving her a somewhat disheveled appearance. The man carrying a lantern beside her seems alarmed. At bottom center, a kneeling man stares up at the beauty with an enraged expression, while at lower right, the clerk Shohachi points at her. A boy beside him places his heads atop his head with a worried expression, while an elderly man in the room behind them watches with his mouth agape. Bando Shuka plays Otsuka. Great expressive figures in a wonderfully detailed setting.
