Na mo Takaki Tengajaya mura, 1860

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Na mo Takaki Tengajaya mura" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo of a couple stopping for a break at a tea stand. At right, the samurai Hayase Iori relaxes on a bench, a pipe and tobacco set in hand. He wears a blue coat over his gray and blue diamond patterned kimono, staring solemnly at his wife, Somenoi. She smiles happily back at him as she tucks one hand into her obi, holding a woven hat in her other hand. Her kimono is shaded from plum to soft pink with a faint border of white butterflies. Tall pine trees frame a view of the blue sky beyond. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. An attractive design with a nicely detailed setting.
