Scene from Oshu Adachigahara, 1852

Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait from the play "Oshu Adachigahara" at the Kawarazaki Theater in Edo. At left, a beauty looks up with a happy smile as she takes a dotted cloth from her shoulders. Her companion stares off into space with an unhappy expression, a long letter in his hands. His hair is pulled back into a knot at the back of his head, and she wears a print kimono over a black undergarment. Colorful maple leaves frame the night sky above. From left, the actors are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Ichikawa Danjuro VIII. Nice expressive figures with soft shading on the background.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 10"

Condition - Good detail. Backed with paper. Small repair, vertical creasing.
