Actors Gathered in an Interior, 1855

Comments - Handsome scene of kabuki actors gathered in an interior for a meal, a large fish and a plate of sushi set out atop a low red lacquer table in the center. The man sitting behind the table scowls angrily, throwing his hands out at his sides. Below him, a beauty in an iris print kimono looks up with a happy smile as she waves a fan, while the fellow at upper left reacts with alarm. The room opens onto a view of a temple in the distance, with rooftops and a pagoda rising above the tree tops. Red paper lanterns frame the night sky. The actors in the left panel include Ichikawa Kodanji IV and Nakamura Gantaro. The actors in the center are Iwai Kumesaburo III and Morita Kan'ya XI. The right panel includes Kataoka Gado II and Nakayama Ichizo. A handsome design with expressive figures, and an interesting look at actors offstage.
