Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers - Handsome design from a late Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki actors with flowers. Each print features a half-length figure with a title cartouche that takes the form of a book surrounded by the selected flower. These attractive designs are nicely colored and detailed, with soft shading in the backgrounds. A rarely seen series, also translated as "Modern Comparison of the Thirty-six Poets."

Loquat Flower of the Secret Melody: Ichikawa Ebizo V as Matsunami Kengyo, actually Akushichibyoe, 1863 - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ebizo V as Matsunami Kengyo, who is actually the samurai Akushichibyoe in disguise. He grimaces with rage as he grips his sword over his shoulder with both hands. He wears a boldly patterned checked kimono over armor trimmed with fur cuffs, two long locks of hair falling over his shoulders with shorter hair sticking up atop his head. A striking design from this handsome series.
