Series; Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers (Tosei mitate sanjuroku kasen)

Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers - Handsome design from a late Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki actors with flowers. Each print features a half-length figure with a title cartouche that takes the form of a book surrounded by the selected flower. These attractive designs are nicely colored and detailed, with soft shading in the backgrounds. A rarely seen series, also translated as "Modern Comparison of the Thirty-six Poets."

Azalea of Iwate: Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Nikki Naonori, 1862 - Handsome kabuki portrait Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as the samurai Nikki Naonori gripping his bow with both hands as he looks back over his shoulder. He wears a one-sleeved red shoulder protector patterned with large blue blossoms over his black kimono, which features a burnished geometric design. His short hair on top is combed smoothly back, his longer locks tied into a neat topknot with white cord. Pink azaleas with green foliage frame the title cartouche at upper right. A great composition, beautifully printed with soft shading on the background.
