Series; Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers (Tosei mitate sanjuroku kasen)

Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers - Handsome design from a late Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki actors with flowers. Each print features a half-length figure with a title cartouche that takes the form of a book surrounded by the selected flower. These attractive designs are nicely colored and detailed, with soft shading in the backgrounds. A rarely seen series, also translated as "Modern Comparison of the Thirty-six Poets."

Safflowers on the Water: Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Watonai, 1861 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Watonai, a samurai who travels to China to help restore the Ming Dynasty, visiting his half-sister to ask her to enlist the help of her husband, General Kanki. She was to pour pigment into the river, either white signaling success for his plan, or red for failure. Here, Watonai lifts his hat leans over to watch for the signal. Unbeknownst to him, the red pigment is actually Kinshojo's blood, who has committed suicide for her failure. A bold design with a dramatic composition, beautifully detailed with embossing on the white rope pattern on the blue kimono.
