Series; Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers (Tosei mitate sanjuroku kasen)

Popular Matches for Thirty-six Selected Flowers - Handsome design from a late Toyokuni III series pairing kabuki actors with flowers. Each print features a half-length figure with a title cartouche that takes the form of a book surrounded by the selected flower. These attractive designs are nicely colored and detailed, with soft shading in the backgrounds. A rarely seen series, also translated as "Modern Comparison of the Thirty-six Poets."

Demon Lily of Suzuka: Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Tennichibo, 1862 - Interesting kabuki scene of Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Tennichibo, a yamabushi or mountain priest who came to Edo to claim that he was the illegitimate son of the Shogun Tokugawa Yoritomo. Based on a true story, he was proven to be an imposter and was executed. Here, he looks over his shoulder with a worried expression, his brows furrowed. His once shaven hair is growing back, and he has a rolled up straw raincoat hanging over his back and a water dipper tucked in his obi. In his outstretched hand he holds a leering demon man with fangs and bulging yellow eyes. A great expressive figure from this rarely seen Toyokuni III series.
